How can I make Biodiesel at home?
Making it at home is not that hard. With a little fabrication skills you can create your own home converter, wash and drying setup.
The most basic is the use of an electric hot water heater. This is used as the reactor itself. Filling the reactor with Waste Vegetable oil, heating it to around 135 deg F. Then injecting a predetermined amount of Methanol and Catalyst, the conversion starts. After mixing for a few hours, the settling stage begins. That can be anywhere from 2 hours to 24 hours. After the settling stage, the draining off of the by product, glycerol, then onto washing. The Biodiesel is actually washed with common tap water.
The next step is drying, either by heat and circulation or simply allowing the water to settle out.
There are many variations of the process and numerous web sites that have more info than one could ever use!
There are some hazards involved with the production and they have to do with storing and handling Methanol and the catalyst such as Lye.
Common sense and a few precautions go a long way. In addition, there may be local or state codes that you will have to adhere to.
